Architect claims 21st century will be the age of renewable timber The 21st century will be the era of renewable timber, according to Alex de Rijke of London architects de Rijke Marsh Morgan. To prove the point, the practice has come up with the “Naked House”, a sustainable, affordable, CO2 responsible, prefabricated flatpack timber house which can be bought online and delivered by container to anywhere in the world within six weeks. The prototype, “Patio – a family house”, is currently on show at the exhibition Industry! Contemporary Meetings between Architecture and Industry at the Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture in Oslo. The cross-laminated solid wood panels of the house are made from fir, spruce and pine. All the numbered elements, including door and window openings, are digitally pre-cut and the cut-outs are used to make furniture inside the house. The external panels, which can be assembled by four people and a small crane in two days, are held together by extra-long screws. This enables the structure to be put up or taken down easily in any location. The houses are delivered to site in standard shipping containers which can be used to form the structure's base as well as a store, garage or boathouse. “Naked House” is available to order online at www.drmm.co.
