Timber chosen ahead of rivals
Autumn 2006
Published: 22 October, 2006
Rising concerns about steel prices made timber the obvious choice for a new showroom An engineered timber flooring system was chosen ahead of steel and concrete for a new motorcycle showroom in Preston. iLevel Trus Joist distributor Truss Form, of Rossendale, supplied TJI joists to the Wyder Honda showroom. According to iLevel Trus Joist, the contract demonstrated how rising steel prices and growing concerns about the environmental impact of both steel and concrete were leading architects and specifiers to choose engineered wood in commercial/office developments. TJI joists, decked with 38mm mezzanine flooring supplied by Puhos Board UK, were used for the ground and first floors, covering a total 363m2. The lighter engineered wood floors meant 40m3 less concrete was used in the foundations and less earth had to be removed. Steel content was reduced by 11.5 tonnes. iLevel Trus Joist said these factors, plus quick installation and flexibility, made engineered wood less expensive than the normal steel girder/pre-cast concrete plank solution.
