Glulam takes theatre spotlight
Published: 13 June, 2007
A £14m development project involving the revamping and remodelling of the Royal and Derngate theatres in Northampton has been completed. The project (Timber Building, Vol 2, 2005) included the use of giant larch glulam beams in the new Creativity Centre, the brainchild of London architects Arts Team. The patinated copper clad centre, which physically links the two theatres, will be home to the Youth Theatre as well as an educational forum for local schools. A glulam half portal structure comprises two 10m lengths that are pinned at the top onto existing columns, while at the bottom beams are pinned onto a concrete base, which forms the box office. A complex sandwich skin braces the structure. Another theatre project designed by Arts Team in Aylesbury, costing £25m, has been approved by councillors and work will start in May. The building will be supported by around 150 exposed laminated timber “fins”, rising 10-15m and spaced irregularly around the exterior. Related articles: |
