Kingspan TEK specified for ultra-sustainable home
Published:  11 March, 2008

The Kingspan TEK Building System enabled the architects to optimise the living space of the house

When the architects of a new super-insulated dorma bungalow were looking for a building solution to deliver high levels of thermal efficiency on a restricted plot, they opted for Kingspan Off-Site’s  TEK Building System

Kingspan Off-Site’s innovative TEK Building System has been specified in a project to create a home that is super-insulated and powered by renewable technology.

The dorma bungalow in North Newbald, North Yorkshire used the Kingspan Off-Site SIP-based timber frame system to create a highly insulated and airtight building, guaranteeing the excellent levels of thermal efficiency required for the property to be almost wholly self-sufficient.

Built on a relatively small plot, and also limited by height restrictions, the Kingspan TEK Building System enabled the architects to optimise the living space of the house. This is due to the fact that the roof space can be used as a living area, increasing the overall space available for use in the building.

The Kingspan TEK Building System, which was supplied and erected by SIPS@Clays, also provided the high levels of thermal insulation, reinforcing the building’s green credentials.

The inclusion of a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system removed the property’s need for conventional central heating. By transferring heat from the air exiting the building to that incoming, the MVHR system ensures the house maintains a comfortable living temperature. The unavailability of a mains gas supply in the area made the MVHR system an ideal alternative with which to heat the property. Solar panels provided the energy required to supply the building with hot water.

Joan Baker, owner of the property said: “The Kingspan TEK Building System was vital in helping us to maximise the use of our site. There was limited space available, and the building system allowed us to increase the room in the house. It’s also cost effective and we’ve achieved our aim of building an environmentally sustainable home.”
