With commercial production of the engineered wood Accoya underway in the Netherlands, BSW Timber, which is the UK and Ireland's sole supplier, is seeing strong interest from architects and housing associations
Twenty-one new energy efficient homes featuring extensive areas of Accoya cladding have been completed.
Eildon Housing Association chose Accoya for the new homes at Tweedbank, Melrose, after spotting the product's aesthetic and durable qualities.
More than 11,000 linear metres of Accoya - finished with a Sikkens coating - was supplied to the project in the Borders by Arnold Lavers.
This and other projects demonstrate the growing popularity of the revolutionary wood for BSW Timber. The company has an exclusive agreement to be the sole supplier of Accoya across the UK and Ireland.
Two of the homes feature heat pumps to test their ability to be used as an alternative energy source to mains gas. The homes also include energy-efficient features such as higher levels of insulation and sunspaces which increase natural light and warmth.
Laurence Cox of Eildon Housing Association, said: “We are delighted with the performance of Accoya, which reflects our commitment to increased sustainability levels and innovative technology."
John Alexander, head of business development at BSW Timber, said Accoya had attracted major interest since the first product arrived in the UK in mid 2007.
"There has been a strong response from architects and housing associations, eager to take advantage of Accoya’s significant benefits for windows, doors & cladding.
"Eildon Housing Association's positive reports demonstrate the market potential for our customers have with manufacture and sales of Accoya timber.
