Eco store marks first major project for B & K Timber Structures

The use of engineered timber saved over 500 tonnes of steel

Retailing giant Asda has kicked off the first stage of its energy efficiency build programme with a giant glulam ‘eco-store’ built by B & K Timber Structures

B & K Timber Structures, the recently launched trading division of B & K Steelwork Fabrications, has completed its first major project with the construction of a new state-of-the-art Asda eco store in Oldham.

Located on a Brownfield site, the 34,313 square foot store is one of the first of its kind in the UK to be built using environmentally sustainable glulam engineered timber and marks the first stage in Asda’s energy efficient build programme.

The contract saw B & K Timber Structures design, manufacture and install the value- engineered timber frame structure using only FSC or PEFC certified timber materials. In addition to reducing carbon emissions and helping Asda meet its own stringent environmental standards, the use of engineered timber saved over 500 tonnes of steel.

The glulam engineered timber frame construction provided the structure for the main store area and was also incorporated as an exposed timber feature in the main entrance canopy and the first floor restaurant area.

Using glulam engineered timber allowed for greater design flexibility as well as providing a strong, renewable resource, which is energy efficient, requires little maintenance and is a highly effective insulator.
