The addition of a dramatic, boat-shaped, glulam-framed, timber clad extension to the Oddfellows Hall in Sheringham, Norfolk has led to a commendation in an architectural competition.
The judges for the Norfolk Architects Association Craftsmanship Awards described the refurbishment of the building as being well executed, “particularly the difficulties of scribing timber against the cobbled facings of the old building”.
The hall has been totally refurbished at a cost of £250,000 to create a community facility and the nautical design of the extension was inspired by the fact that the building was originally the town’s lifeboat station.
The refurbishment was designed by Norwich architects Chaplin & Farrant and undertaken by builder and carpenter H Smith and Sons of Honingham.
