Pinelog has supplied a complete timber building solution for a new energy-efficient parish centre in Kent.
Carlton Hall, the parish centre for Our Lady of the Angels in Erith, Kent was built over 75 years ago. However, it was energy inefficient and as the parish grew it became too small. The decision was therefore taken to demolish then replace it.
Its replacement was to be built to all the latest building and energy standards, be able to withstand hard use and be flexible enough to stage a variety of functions. It had to have a main hall with a seating capacity of 150, a children’s group facility, three meeting rooms, kitchen, bar and toilets.
Pastor - Brother James Boner and a committee comprising representatives from the Order and qualified parishioners, first used the internet to study different building styles and produce a short list of commercial building specialists. However, after a visit to one of Pinelog’s signature projects the contract was awarded to them.
The new Angelus Centre is a timber frame structure with glulam laminated columns, curved beams and trusses, giving a vaulted roof style in the large function room. It has a linked access to the main church building, is faced externally with block and render and a joint-free continuous GRP curved roof.
Glazed curtain walling in a stepped pattern and high level glazing make optimum use of natural light to create a light airy feel in the function room. A kitchen, bar, meeting rooms, WCs and store rooms are located on either side of this rooml which has an oak floor. Other key features of the new facility include a canopy over the main entrance which follows the roof line and an interesting entrance lobby.
High levels of insulation and double glazing combine to keep running costs to a minimum. Double skinned walls and special sound insulation ensure that neighbours are not disturbed when the hall is used for functions.
Brother James Boner said: "The fact that Pinelog was able to combine its skills to provide a complete solution was a tremendous benefit for us. Its handling of building design, project management, organisation of site works, landscaping and liaison with the planning authorities meant this project went through smoothly.
"We are delighted. frafrIt reflects our aspirations and enjoys great popularity with all users."
