144 bespoke trusses were used on each house

Creating curved roofscapes
Published:  13 October, 2008

Bespoke trusses from Cheshire Roof Trusses, designed using Wolf Systems’ design software, were supplied to a housing association in Rochdale

The regeneration of the Langley housing estate in Rochdale has included the erection of two new apartment buildings with distinctive curved roofscapes, created using Cheshire Roof Trusses’ manufacturing expertise and Wolf Systems’ design software.

Cheshire Roof Trusses, a specialist Wolf Systems manufacturer, was involved in supplying a total of 288 bespoke trusses for the Bowlee Housing Association development in Keswick Close, Rochdale.  G&J Seddon was the main contractor for the scheme which is providing affordable accommodation for local people.

Ian Lewis, of Cheshire Roof Trusses, said: “We are committed to Wolf and the exclusive software it provides enables us to design the structure for complex projects such as this; then we assemble using the connector plates to produce the actual trusses.

“In this instance, the architect’s drawings gave us the dimensions and the radius to which we matched the faceted trusses. There were 144 of them on each of the two buildings, carrying a plywood deck and a single skin roofing membrane.”

Despite the 9.5 metre span of the roof, from the central supporting wall to the eaves, the design ensured that only standard section timbers were required to support the loading conditions.

G & J Seddon employed its own labour to erect the roof trusses on this contract, though Cheshire Roof Trusses does offer its customers a full installation service.
