Arup team wins Helsinki low carbon design competition

A design team led by London-based ARUP has won the Low2No Competition to build a sustainable development in Helsinki.

The “c_life - City as living factory of ecology” team also included Sauerbruch Hutton, Experientia and Galley Eco and beat four other shortlisted entries to build Finland’s first carbon neutral district.

The jury praised all five shortlisted entries for material efficiency, particularly the use of timber structures as a carbon sink strategy.

The competition, run by the Finnish Innovation Fund (Sitra), sought comprehensive solutions to low/no carbon building solutions, including identifying opportunities for a Low2No block in the Jätkäsaari district.

Arup’s project was judged as highlighting two important insights: the creation of a carbon neutral district dovetailed with consumer oriented planning, thus supporting Sitra’s objective of empowering citizens.

“Sitra’s competition has given valuable material for future practices within the city of Helsinki, which will be encouraging new site owners to similar low energy building,” said Helsinki deputy mayor Hannu Penttilä.
