The award-winning Creagan cottages

Cairngorms timber cottages win awards
Published:  09 November, 2009

A housing project in the Cairngorms National Park which showcases the use of Scottish timber has won two awards.

Creagan Gorm cottages at Glenmore, designed by John Gilbert Architects, won the Sustainable Smaller Social Housing Project of the Year at Inside Housing’s Sustainable Housing Awards 2009 and a bronze award for sustainable design at the Roses Design Awards.

The two affordable timber frame homes for Albyn Housing Association, designed to minimise energy use throughout construction and occupation, features Forest Stewardship Council-certified timber (mainly Scottish wood) for the frame and cladding.

Other features include recycled newsprint insulation, rainwater harvesting and multi-fuel stores to heat the main rooms.

Local arborculturist SAS for Trees oversaw the development to ensure enhancement of the surrounding forest. New native trees were mixed with existing mature trees to give a cohesive canopy around the houses, thus maintaining the forest setting.
