Willmott Dixon uses SIPs for school
Published: 26 January, 2010
Willmott Dixon has used structural insulated panels (SIP) to construct a 7,000m2 school building in Melton Mowbray. The build for John Ferneley, which has been uprated from school to college status specialising in business and enterprise, was undertaken by specialist contractor McVeigh Insulations, McVeigh fabricated large format SIPs measuring 7x3.8m, using a combination of 150mm and 180mm-thick panels for walls and pitched roofs. Panels were craned into position and fixed to primary steel framework, with 900m2 of roof panels in position within three days. “Using SIPs is our preferred option, for the thermal insulation, ease of construction and speed the technology brings to a project,” said Willmott Dixon’s Les Henson. “At John Ferneley, we have been able to eliminate much of the secondary steel required under traditional techniques, and optimise natural light, with windows up to 5m wide, by using large format SIPs.” The project architectural practice was White Design.
