Stewart Milne wins sustainable build competition
Published: 25 November, 2010
Stewart Milne’s Sigma II timber frame build system will be used for a sustainable building project in West Lothian after the housebuilder won a Scottish government design competition. Milne in conjunction with Malcolm Fraser Architects won the Whitecross Design Competition, run by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and the government, ahead of 40 other entries. The competition was to design the first 70-80 homes of a proposed 1500-home community extension for the village of Whitecross. The first phase requires a 60% reduction in CO2 production. The Sigma II system is designed to meet Level Four of the Code for Sustainable Homes and is already in commercial production. It is a closed panel system based on ITW Industry’s SpaceStud system – twin timber studs connected by galvanized metal clips, giving a deeper wall section to fit thicker insulation.
