Ekki timbers used in bridge renovation
Published: 19 April, 2011
Machined ekki timbers have been used in the renovation of the 414ft long Scarborough Bridge. The 1827 footbridge need extensive work to its decking and walkway supports – edge timbers spliced to main support beams had begun to sag and heavy corrosion had affected the safety and strength of the metal connections holding the timber. Timber supplier Timbmet sourced the replacement African ekki timber and machined the beams to allow connections to fit precisely. Beams now span the entire width of the deck without affecting wrought iron arch supports. Ekki, commonly used in heavy building work and marine applications, is renowed for its strength and durability. Related articles: |
