Masonry village hall build changed to timber frame
Published: 01 November, 2011
A new 167m2 timber frame village hall project in north Wiltshire has been switched from masonry to timber frame. The Goss Croft Village Hall project started out as a conventional build using blockwork rendered with a concrete tile roof but the cost of construction was about £100,000 beyond the trustees’ fund-raising capability. Initially, some members of the design team opposed the concept of having a timber-framed village hall, arguing it would be expensive to maintain and would cost a similar amount to masonry. Three timber frame companies bid for the project and Timberworks Europe was selected to supply and erect the structure. Its price was some £80,000 less than its nearest competitor. The structure will be prefabricated in Estonia and trucked to the UK for rapid assembly. Timberworks suggested that a proven contractor with experience in constructing timber frame buildings was used – Eastown Construction was selected. Timberworks said the project is on schedule.
