Milton Keynes to get first Passivhaus
Published: 01 November, 2011
Touchwood Homes is to build Milton Keynes’ first Passivhaus home. The four-bedroom timber frame house, designed by Eco Design Consultants, will be built on the edge of Howe Park Wood, a site of special scientific importance in Milton Keynes, for the Parks Trust, a charity that cares for the town’s green spaces. The house will feature high standards of insulation and exceptional airtightness to minimise heat loss, with the building oriented to maximise solar gain during summer, while mechanical ventilation and heat recovery will operate during winter. Photovoltaic panels will generate electricity and will feed back into the National Grid, thereby minimising or even eliminating fuel bills. It is the first time project manager Jackson Coles has worked on a Passivhaus home but it has established a successful record of delivering sustainable projects - most recently the award-winning Brockholes Visitor Village in Lancashire by Adam Khan Architects, which features a glulam frame. “Milton Keynes has in the past led the way on many environmental initiatives, not least the creation of the Parks Trust,” said David Foster, chief executive of The Parks Trust. “This is a great opportunity to place Milton Keynes back at the forefront of low carbon living.” Related articles: |
