CLT features in town redevelopment
Published: 26 January, 2012
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel construction will figure prominently in a multi-million pound redevelopment of Keynsham town centre. The £34m project entails demolition of the old town hall, library and adjacent shops and offices. Among the buildings that will replace them are a new two-storey library and “one-stop shop for the community” and a larger retail and office building. These will combine a reinforced concrete plinth ground floor, housing retail units, and upper storeys in CLT structural panels, three in the case of the office blocks, produced from “offcuts from the sawmilling industry”. Externally, they will be clad in a mix of lightweight brass and timber. The ‘delivery partner’ for the scheme chosen by Bath and North East Somerset Council is Wilmott Dixon, which has been involve in a number of major CLT construction projects, including the recently constucted eight-storey Bridport House apartment building in London. It said that sustainability was a key aspect of the Keynsham scheme and energy efficiency would be “built into the design”, which is “specified to achieve the top A rating under the government’s Energy Performance Certification Scheme”.
