TJI-joists coated with the Flak Jacket fire protection system

Weyerhaeuser launches fire protected I-joists
Published:  07 February, 2012

Weyerhaeuser has launched a fire protection system for its TJI-joists in North America.

The company’s new “Flak Jacket” protection involves a specialty coating applied to TJI-joists to improve their fire protection.

The coating, which confers a grey colour to the OSB web and part of the LVL flange, is designed to provide builders with a way to achieve one-hour floor/ceiling assemblies and comply with new International Residential Code fire protection requirements.

The one-hour protection is achieved with only a single layer of gypsum and no mineral wool.

Weyerhaeuser says builders can still cut and drill the joists as usual and use standard hangers.
